Chapter 49
THEN:
If you donât tell her, I will.
Ethanâs words were nagging at her in the back of her mind. He kept telling her to talk to their mom about Billyâto tell her the truth. Yet Jade hadnât been able to, and Billy still came over often, eating dinner or helping their mom out with something. It felt like he was just always there.
Jade sat in her room, trying to find the courage. She closed her eyes and clenched her fists. She didnât want to do this. She really didnât. She knew her mom would be sad; she might even cry, and there was nothing worse in the world.
How am I even supposed to say it? How? And what afterward? Will she look at me differently? Will she think I started it? That I made him think I wanted him to do it? I did wear that dress at the party. He liked the dress, he said. If only I hadnât worn it? Maybe itâs my own fault. Heâll say it was anyway, and who will she believe? I did look at him and smile at him.
I liked him. I wanted him to like me too.
âNo,â Jade said and shook her head. She glared at her own reflection in the body-sized mirror covering her wall next to her bed. She barely recognized herself anymore. Her hair was greasy, and she was without makeup. She couldnât remember the last time she had put on even mascara. She didnât like to look at herself anymore. âItâs a mistake. There is no way this can end well. Itâs his word against mine, and maybeâ¦well, maybe I wanted it to happen.â
Jade looked down at her fingers. She had bitten the nails down so far; there was barely anything left. The hoodie she was wearing smelled bad and needed to be washed. But she didnât want to take it off and had been sleeping in it as well.
She was a mess.
Please, donât make me do it! Canât we just leave it where it is and forget about it? No one needs to know.
Jade touched her stomach gently as a tear escaped her eye. It rolled slowly down her cheek till it landed on her upper lip, paving the way for a few more that followed. She didnât even bother to wipe them away. She stared at her reflection, wondering if her mother would ever look at her the same way after this. Would her brother? Would anything in life ever be good again?
Donât let him get away with it.
Her brotherâs words felt harsh. He didnât understand, did he? What it was like to fall in love with someone out of your reach, to want something to happen, and then when it did, it was just so wrong and not anything like what she wanted it to be. She could barely think about it, think about Billy, or the way he touched her that night. She had liked it when he kissed her because she liked him. But what followed made her feel dirty and made her angry with herself.
